| Ambrosia Maple | ||

Q. What is it? A. Ambrosia Maple is the wood we use in our Champlain Collection. Its dramatic colouring is caused by the Ambrosia Beetle. The beetle causes pinholes and attacks recently killed/cut trees, logs, and green lumber. Interestingly, the strength of the wood is not affected in the slightest. The beetle does not consume the wood as it excavates its tunnel; however, as it burrows, two types of fungus are produced. The first grows on the walls of the tunnel serving as nourishment for the beetle. When introduced, the second fungus causes colourful streaks of black, grey, brown, and red/green. These fungus are killed when the tree is harvested and kiln dried. |
Q. Where does it grow? A. Ambrosia Maple is one of many Maple hardwood varieties. This species' strength, durability, and grain characteristics make it ideal for furniture-making. Ambrosia Maple grows abundantly in the glacial region surrounding the Great Lakes, and the Appalachian region in the north eastern United States and Canada. These regions are rich in hardwood of exceptional quality, with very tight growth rings, colour variations and strong fibres. This species grows quickly in damper environments, and if not harvested, has a relatively short life span. |
